They bring together professionals from Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Since 1979, they have been a resource and advocate for the green industry.

Stump grinding vs Stump removal

Stump grinding requires the stump to be reduced into small pieces by using a mechanical tool. These small pieces can be used as a ground cover or a mulch. After the stump is grounded to within a few inches below the surrounded earth, what’s left is covered by dirt and top soil. After a period of time, the remaining section of the stump will decay along with the roots system of the original tree.

Stump removal is when the stump of the trunk and the entire root ball is removed from the ground. Many homeowners are surprised to learn that the root ball has dramatically increased in size over time and are unprepared for the large hole that is left behind. Most root balls will be 4 to 10 times the trunk size of the mature tree. While the technique is only slightly more complicated than stump grinding, time and cost are the main considerations.

There are reasons to employ both techniques, but stump grinding is certainly the more economical and time saving option.

When to prune?

Other than light pruning and removing dead wood, which can be done any time, you can follow these simple guidelines.

Pruning done in the Winter while the plant is dormant is the most common practice (best done after the coldest days have past). This technique usually results in a big burst of growth in the Spring and should be used if that’s the result you’re after.

To stunt the growth of certain limbs or “slow” the overall development of the tree, prune in Summer after the seasonal growth is completed. This is also a good time to shape the tree when the weight of leaves provides reveals defective or over-burdened limbs.

If your goal is to enhance flowering, prune trees that bloom in spring, when their flowers begin to fade. For trees and shrubs that flower in the mid or late summer, pruning should be done in winter or early spring.

We’re always available to help you with your pruning needs regardless of the time of you. Simply use the form on this page to contact us.
